Communities in the vicinity of the Climate Investor One-funded Release solar power projects near Maroua and Guider in Northern Cameroon live in poverty with limited access to economic opportunities.
Release is contributing to several community development initiatives being implemented by ENEO (Cameroon's national electricity integrated utility and the project’s offtaker).These initiatives are designed to improve rural livelihoods and strengthen the economic autonomy of these communities through education, skills development, and livelihood interventions. There is a particular focus on women, youth, and organized groups.
To date, the initiatives have delivered 180school desks benefiting approximately 720students, 500 cashew seedlings for use in training by the Guider School of Agronomy, agricultural processing equipment including grain mills and oil extractors, and specialised protective clothing for women. So far 60 woman have directly benefited from the delivery of equipment and PPE.
It is anticipated that agricultural productivity will increase by 50-70% as a result of the initiatives, providing much needed economic benefits to the project beneficiaries and their wider communities.
